For hundreds of years arms and armour played an important role in the education of elite children. Boys in particular learned how to use both in preparation for their entry into the adult male world and their future responsibilities as warriors and leaders.  This talk will examine some of the armours and weapons made for them and will explore the wider social contexts in which they were used.  

About the speaker: Keith Dowen recently joined the Wallace Collection as Curator of Arms and Armour after spending nine years as Assistant Curator at the Royal Armouries, Leeds. He has published and lectured widely on all aspects of arms and armour and military history and has a particular interest in the role of arms and armour in expressing identity in medieval and early modern societies.
