Join co-curators Dr Lucy Davis and Dr Xavier Bray, and artist and writer Paul Rafferty for an illuminating introduction to our new exhibition, Winston Churchill: The Painter. Offering a rare opportunity to encounter paintings seldom accessible to the public, the exhibition brings new attention to Sir Winston Churchill’s lifelong passion for painting.
In this special after-hours event, our speakers will discuss the intentions and ideas behind this fascinating show while revealing the less well-known artistic side of this world-famous figure.
About the speakers:
Dr Lucy Davis is Curator of Paintings at the Wallace Collection and co-curator of Winston Churchill: The Painter.
Dr Xavier Bray is Director of the Wallace Collection and co-curator of Winston Churchill: The Painter.
Paul Rafferty is a painter, sculptor and author. After moving to the Côte d’Azur, France, in 2008, he found himself painting in many of the same locations Churchill had painted. This led him to write his book Winston Churchill: Painting on the French Riviera, (2020).
In 2023, Rafferty created the first of three life-sized bronze statues titled Winston Churchill: The Artist. These were placed in St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Maison Pol Roger in Épernay, France and Blenheim Palace. The maquette for the statue is in the collection of Number 10 Downing Street.
