Elizabeth Catharine Carnac married Brigadier-General John Carnac in 1769. Carnac had become a close confidant of Robert Clive, Governor of Bengal (1758-60; 1764-7) and amassed a great fortune while in India. The couple left for India while the portrait was underway, never to return. Join curator Dr Lucy Davis in placing this portrait in the context of the returning English ‘nabobs’ and the controversy surrounding the East India Company at the time.
